CAMPOBELLO, S.C. — Richard B. Davenport, 89, died Monday, June 28, 2004, in Laurel Wood Assisted Living, Columbus, N.C.

Born in Indianapolis, Ind., he was the son of the late John W. and Margaret McCarrtney Davenport.

He was the widower of Julia Carico Davenport, who died in 2003.

Mr. Davenport served as a master sergeant in the Tennessee National Guard. A graduate of Purdue University, he was captain of the swim and water polo teams and a member of Phi Delta Kappa Fraternity. He was the founder of Chattanooga Swimming League, was a former teacher, coach and principal in Chattanooga for 42 years. In l983 Mr. Davenport was inducted into the Tennessee Hall of Fame for swimming and in 2001 the Chattanooga, Tenn., Hall of Fame. He was a former member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Chattanooga.

Surviving are a daughter, Judith Myers of Highskill, Tenn.; two sons, Cary Davenport of Campobello, S.C., and John Davenport of Washington, D.C. Also surviving are nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 1, in Tryon Presbyterian Church, Tryon, N.C.

Saw this AM that Mr. Davenport died.  Had him for Biology.  Great man, going to miss him.
