Elizabeth Marshall "Beth" Rushworth, 92, died
Thursday, May 12, 2004.
A native of Pittsburgh, PA, Mrs. Rushworth grew up in the community of
Dayton, PA, close to Pittsburgh. She received her B.S. degree from Indiana
State University in Indiana, P A, and began her teaching career in
Pennsylvania schools. Eventually she met her future husband, B.D. Rushworth,
when they both began teaching at Ligonier High School in Ligonier, Pa.
The Rushworths came to Chattanooga in 1948 when the University of
Chattanooga sought out and hired Mr. Rushworth to the faculty of the music
department. Mrs. Rushworth retired from teaching twenty years at Chattanooga
High School where she was the head of the business education department and
involved in many student activities including sponsoring the Classes of 1965
and 1973. Her interests and activities revolved around her family, her
church, and helping others, as evidenced by the variety of leadership
capacities in which she served in the organization of United Presbyterian
Church Women at local, regional, and national levels. She was a member of
Delta Kappa Gamma, served in the area P.T.A. council, board of Newton
Community Center, and various other organizations. She and Mr. Rushworth
enjoyed many years of volunteer service though "Meals on Wheels" at Senior
Neighbors of Chattanooga and by volunteering and serving on the board of the
Erlanger Hospital gift shop.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years. Survivors include her
sister, Marjorie Lloyd-Knoxville, brother, Harry Coleman(Kathleen)-Dayton, P
A, sister-in-law, Mary Elizabeth Cunningham-Pittsburgh, P A, her three
children: Marcia Rushworth Beazley (Paul)-Columbia, SC, Marilyn Rushworth
Hayward (Nathan 111)-Wilmington, DE, and Rick Rushworth (Suzanne), and her
six grandchildren: Paul Derrick Beazley (Jennifer)-Charleston, SC, Marshall
Rushworth, Elizabeth W. Rushworth, Nate Hayward -Wilmington, DE, Geordie
Hayward-Wilmington, DE, and Rachel Rushworth.
In keeping with her life of "giving," Mrs. Rushworth has donated her body to
UT Medical Center for anatomical research.
A memorial service will be held Sunday at 9:00 a.m. - Second Presbyterian
Church.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. on Saturday in
the Elmore room at Second Presbyterian Church and also at 8:00 a.m. at the
church preceding the service.
